Every year during Major League Baseball’s playoff season, the mayors of playoff-bound teams make friendly wagers on the upcoming series.  In the case of Mikey Bloomberg (the mayor of New York City) and R.T. Rybak (the mayor of Minneapolis), the mayors are putting a case of their cities’ craft beers on the line.

After two games, the Yankees are up in their series.  At the same time, I’m plotting a caper to capture the incoming bounty.  While Bloomy said he would send some local produce and a case of Brooklyn Lager to Minnesota if the Twins can pull off the series win, Mayor Rybak promised to send some Surlyproduce and a case of local beer from the Surly Brewing company.  Surly produces some fantastic brews, all packaged in cans.  Their Coffee Bender even won a bronze medal in this years GABF (Great American Beer Festival).

Surly Brewing does not distribute far from home.   Therefore, very few people in New York have seen, or even know about, its fantastic brews.  But I must say this: After Mike brought some of their tasty beers home with him after a recent trip to Minneapolis, I was totally hooked.  So all you craft beer lovers out there, if you can get your hands on a can or two of their fine product then good for you.    I, however, might need to take up a collection for bail money after the Yankees win the series.  PLAY BALL!!

    Hi Seth,

Great Work! I have been involved in craft beer for more than 12 years in NYC before there were all of these beer bars! I opened with my brother David Copperfield’s House of Beer in 1998 and the Hop Devil Southwestern Grill & Beer Bar in 05. Anyway, I loved episode one. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it. I remember when we opened our first beer bar and people told us it wouldn’t work. That NYC wasn’t a beer town. We told them we would make it a beer town. While we certainly don’t deserve all of the credit it amazes me how much it has grown. Now we have tons of competition. Just amazing.

  2. Were you able to try the Surly Darkness? Unbelievable!
I’d love to send you guys some, interested in a trade?

Oooooh a trade, I could check my stash and see if I have anything that would worthy of such a trade. Do you live in Minnesota and therefore don’t get a lot of stuff from the northeast? I’ll just go onto your nice website and continue these negotiations there. Sorry Mike (my co-host), this was my post so it’s my Darkness.
